About Holmbrook.eu
An independent editorial archive for Romanian genealogy, family history, and archival research.
What this resource is
Holmbrook.eu was set up to address a gap in English-language documentation on Romanian genealogical research. Most existing guides either cover genealogy in general terms or are written in Romanian, leaving foreign-origin researchers and diaspora communities without a practical starting point.
The content here draws from Romania's official archival institutions — the National Archives (Arhivele Naționale ale României), county-level branches, and international partners including FamilySearch — and from firsthand experience navigating Romania's civil and ecclesiastical registry systems.
Editorial scope
Articles on this site deal with three broad areas:
- The structure and access procedures of Romanian national and county archives
- Church registers (metrice) across Orthodox, Greek-Catholic, and Protestant denominations
- Practical research methodology — how to move from a family name to a documented lineage using the records that survive
Content is updated as new digitization projects come online and as access procedures change. Each article carries a visible update date.
